Defensive Female Kingfisher
I’ve never seen a Kingfisher pose like this before.

While I was out photographing my local Kingfishers I saw a behavior and pose that I’d never seen before. As we head into Autumn the Kingfisher mating season is well and truly over now. I’ve seen their young fledge and the male and female part ways to there solatary territories.

Every now and again I see them cross paths and usually entails an energetic and aerobatic chase across the water. It’s usually over within seconds and they both go on their way.

I was watching the Female Kingfisher fishing from one of her favourite posts and suddenly saw her go into a prone position (pictured above).

The Male Kingfisher had landed on a branch about 15 feet away from her and that’s when the stare-down started.

The Male Kingfisher is just 15 feet from the Female Kingfisher

The male Kingfisher then immediately flew right over the top of her and landed above. The female wasn’t impressed and let out a few angry calls and flew away.

Watching these Kingfishers over the last couple of years has been an absolute joy. I witnessed and learned so much about them.

They are truly one of our most amazing UK bird species.
