Wonderful Waxwing Wows Wildlife Photographers in Lancashire

Hey there, friends! Let me tell you about my Saturday morning adventure in Lancashire, UK. As a wildlife photographer, I’m always on the lookout for rare and beautiful species to capture on camera. So when I heard about a Waxwing bird sighting in Darcy Lever, I knew I had to get there.

I woke up before sunrise (I had a busy non-birding day ahead) and hopped on the motorway for a 40-minute drive to the location. I arrived just as the sun was starting to peek over the housetops, and I was all on my own (for a short period of time).

After a bit of waiting, I finally spotted the waxwing bird perched on a branch. It was a magical moment – the bird’s vibrant colours and unique feather pattern were truly breathtaking. I quickly got to work, snapping photos from different angles and trying to capture the bird’s personality on camera.

For those of you who may not know, waxwings are a type of bird that are native to Scandinavia and are distributed from there, across Russia, all the way to the Pacific coast. They have a distinctive appearance, with a striking combination of grey, brown, yellow, and red feathers. Waxwings are known for their love of fruit, especially berries, and can often be found in orchards or parks during the winter months.

But here’s the kicker – waxwings are actually migratory birds! They breed in northern parts of Europe and Asia, but during the winter months, they migrate south in search of food. So if you’re lucky enough to spot one of these beauties, it’s definitely a rare and special occasion.

All in all, it was an incredible morning spent with this amazing bird. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to photograph it and share its beauty with others.

So keep your eyes peeled, friends – you never know when a rare waxwing sighting might pop up in your own neck of the woods!

Till next time,

Scott
